Pet Portraits

I create beautiful, realistic pet portraits in pastel and watercolour. I work very hard to ensure I capture every aspect of your pets character and features, working from your own personal photographs.

I understand this is likely to be a very special painting and I offer photo updates as I go along in order to make sure you’re happy with the development of your painting.

Top Tips for a great pet portrait photo

Natural daylight for a clear picture

A photo taken outdoors during the day, or a photo indoors where there is lots of natural light works best! This helps me to clearly see their features like hair and eye colour.

Take close-up photo at your pet’s level

Try to get down to the pet’s level and take a head-on photo. Alternatively, a photo taken at a slight angle looks great, as long as it clearly captures both eyes.

Take a photo of your pet in a seated or upright position

Photograph your pet in a seated position looking forward where possible. I can often work from photos where the pet is lay down, as long as I can clearly see the full head and shoulders upright. In most cases I will only paint the head and shoulders of your pet, but depending on the photo, I can add in more of the image if you request this.

Send me more than one photo

I ask that you send me at least 2 or 3 photos so I can advise what photo would look best! Most importantly, make sure it’s a photo of the pet that you love! Remember this painting may be on your wall for many years, so you want to be sure to pick the perfect shot.

FAQ's

How much does a pet portrait cost?

Please refer to the price guide below. Please note this is not a definite cost, as the cost of your portrait may vary slightly depending on factors such as the breed or type of animal, or the complexity of photo that I am copying from. I will provide an accurate quote upon selecting a photo. You will be under no obligation to go ahead once I have provided this quote 🙂

How long will it take to complete my pet portrait?

Once we have agreed on the photograph to use, I will ask you if you would like your portrait to be completed by a specific date. I will then propose a date that your portrait will be completed. I will always strive to complete the painting as soon as possible, however this date can be affected by my waiting list of commissions. I recommend placing an order several weeks, if not months in advance to guarantee this will be complete in time for the occasion.

How do I pay for my pet portrait?

Once we have agreed on a photograph, I will quote my price and ask for a 50% non-refundable deposit to confirm your commission. Upon competition of the drawing I will send you a photograph – if you are happy with the piece, I will request payment for the remainder of the cost.      Then, I will post the painting to you, or if you are local, we can arrange a time for collection.

Will the pet portrait be framed?

My prices do not include framing, however professional framing can be arranged at an extra cost. Alternatively, I can offer advice about how to frame the piece yourself.
